Under 14 Football Sportsman’s Club Shield

Under 14 Football Sportsman’s Club Shield

The Sportsman’s Club shield was first played for in 1975 – that year it was won by Hazlehead Academy.  At the time Hazlehead had a great S2 team which included Neil Cooper who went on to win a Cup Winners Cup medal and numerous other trophies with Aberdeen, Rangers and Scotland.

Over its 50 year history it has only once before been won by Harlaw Academy – in 1983.  David Robertson, who went on to play for Aberdeen, Rangers and Scotland played in that particular Harlaw team.

It has taken 32 years to bring it back to Harlaw – so this is a major achievement.  Hopefully this insight into the history of the trophy is an inspiration to the boys who played in the 2015 team which beat Oldmachar 5-0 in the final.  Maybe one or more of this squad can follow in the footsteps of the local legends named above.

Sportsman’s Club Shield – match report

Harlaw started well but both teams had chances in opening 15 minutes

15 minutes into game Ewan Reid ran in from the right onto a through ball from Kyle Koss.  He took one touch before hitting a fierce shot over the keeper and into the far corner of the net. (1-0 Harlaw)

17 minutes Oldmachar keeper made good save at the feet of Zane Islane

28 minutes Saiyed Ahmed won a challenge in midfield and from 20 yards fired the ball into the roof of the net (2-0 Harlaw)

40 minutes good save from Oldmachar keeper following a free kick and shot from Saiyed Ahmed

44 minutes Zane Islane held up a through ball, he played a neat 1-2 with Keiran Jamieson before slipping the ball under the advancing Oldmachar keeper (3-0 Harlaw)

50 minutes Ewan Reid played ball through to Liam Mewes on the right wing.  Mewes rounded two defenders before releasing a shot which was well saved by the keeper.  As the ball broke free Zane Islane was on hand to tap it into the net.  (4-0 Harlaw).  Zane was then substituted by Dylan Dalgleish.

55 minutes Mohamed Shafik was substituted by Bartek Malinowski and Ewan Reid went back into defence.  Keiran Jamieson rounded the Oldmachar defence and delivered a dangerous cross which was met by Saiyed Ahmed.  His header went narrowly over the bar.

60 minutes Devan Harman came on for Kyle Koss

65 minutes a long free kick from Oldmachar was brilliantly saved by Harlaw keeper Dawid Zdunczyk.  From the resulting corner Oldmachar came very close but as Ewan Gordon cleared off the line the official signalled for offside.

70 minutes in the last attack of the game Liam Mewes had a strong run down the right taking on 2 defenders.  He ran in towards the near post before slipping the ball across the goal for Dylan Dalgleish to score from close range (5-0 Harlaw).

Harlaw captain Morgan Bruce was presented with the trophy at full time.

Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse

All pupils at Harlaw Academy will have the chance to view the Solar Eclipse tomorrow (weather permitting).

Viewing the eclipse has a number of educational purposes:

  • To raise awareness of eye safety amongst pupils, parents and staff
  • To experience the wonder of the moment – do the birds make a racket? Does it get colder? How dark does it get? (our pupils will never have experienced this event before and we want it to be memorable and safe)
  • To do one or two specific things with some classes relating to Science/Physics

We have sourced protective glasses for pupils that will be handed out on Friday morning to ensure that pupils are able to view the eclipse safely.

Go4Set with ConocoPhillips

Go4SET

Go4SetThis is Harlaw Academy’s 4th year working with ConocoPhillips through the STEM Go4Set project. This has been a superb opportunity for over 100 students at Harlaw to experience working with young ConocoPhillips engineers on STEM projects, learning employability skills such as problem solving, presentation skills, time keeping and meeting deadlines as well as getting a first class taste of life in the Oil industry.

This year’s project has been based on targets to promote health in the school and groups have been working on topics like, healthy eating, pollution and even apps to encourage staff to be more healthy! This work has been ably and enthusiastically supported by Ali Bain, Deborah Burnett, Jenny Gilbertson and Mike Atkinson.

The highlight of the project so far has been last week’s class visit to our engineers at ConocoPhillips offices. The students enjoyed a packed and varied day where ConocoPhillips staff and staff from Fit Nut took time out their days to help the students develop their thinking on health and how this is encouraged in the ethos of ConocoPhillips. The students learned about simple steps they could take to maintain and improve their own physical heath and how to eat healthily in a delicious and tasty way. ConocoPhillips staff also gave the students excellent presentations on the need for Health and Safety in the oil industry, making them think about risks associated with everyday objects, simple steps which when given a bit of thought can improve people working environments and the opportunity to sit in on an emergency response exercise.

IMG_0378Both the students and staff involved from Harlaw would like to extend their thanks to all concerned for providing such an excellent experience and leaving us challenged to think further about what we can do as a school to improve our own health and the health of our environment.

We look forward to further collaboration through future Go4Set STEM projects!
